For years it has been a constant presence in my life, a place of beauty, reflection and quiet observation. Yet beneath its surface lies a story shared by rivers across the world: a story of fragility, neglect, resilience and survival. The Hogsmill is a river of remarkable significance. Famous for being one of the world's rare chalk streams, it has shaped both landscape and culture for centuries. Its waters inspired some of the most iconic works of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, including the location believed to have influenced John Everett Millais's masterpiece, Ophelia. The river also played a vital role in Britain's industrial history, powering mills and supporting the gunpowder industry that once flourished along its banks. Today, it remains a refuge for wildlife and a living thread connecting past and present. This project began not as an environmental campaign, but as a personal relationship with a river. Through years of walking its banks, photographing its changing moods and witnessing both its beauty and its decline. Chalk streams are among the rarest freshwater habitats on Earth. They support extraordinary ecosystems, providing homes for countless species and sustaining communities that have grown around them for centuries. While England is home to approximately 85% of the world's chalk streams, these remarkable rivers can also be found in countries including France, Denmark and New Zealand. Across the world, rivers are under increasing pressure from pollution, sewage discharges, industrial waste, agricultural runoff and the growing demands of human activity. From small rural streams to some of the world's greatest rivers, clean water is becoming one of the defining environmental issues of our time. The Hogsmill is simply one story within a much larger story. Working across analogue photography, alternative photographic processes and physical intervention, I have chosen to let the river itself become part of the creative process. Water collected from the river is used to alter, stain and transform the photographs. Chance, chemistry and environmental conditions become collaborators, allowing the river to leave its own mark upon the work. The resulting images exist somewhere between documentation and testimony. They are records of a place, but also physical objects shaped by the very landscape they depict. Each stain, mark and imperfection becomes evidence of a living ecosystem under pressure. Clean water is not a luxury - It is a human right. Although rooted in a single chalk stream in South West London, this project is intended for a global audience.
