This is the River Hogsmill, once clear, cold, and full of life, flowing through the oldest borough in London before joining the River Thames. Around 85% of the world’s chalk streams are found in England. They are a natural wonder, rare, delicate, and quietly beautiful. Yet many, including the Hogsmill, are under pressure. Halfway down its course, the river is polluted by sewage discharged from a privatised water company. What begins as clarity shifts into contamination. This local, isolated stretch of river reflects a much wider condition, what is happening here is part of a larger, global issue affecting rivers and waterways. Started during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the project grew from returning to the same stretch of river again and again. Watching it. Listening. Standing in it. This is a project about repetition, and about letting go. The process mirrors the stream - ebb and flow, slow change over time. The work exists as a 20-image series built through layered processes that move between observation and breakdown. Flowers and plants gathered along the banks are collected slowly and pressed over time. These are used to create lumen solar prints, left for days to form and naturally shift. Alongside this, illustration negatives, drawn as portrait studies of these same flowers, are repeatedly used and re-used, breaking down the image surface. This repetition reflects the ongoing, excessive sewage discharge into the chalk stream. In parallel, the film itself is pushed beyond control. Medium format film, cut down from aerial stocks, is hand-prepared in the darkroom. Each roll is pre-flashed using different objects, light, and materials. In addition to this, medium format images are film souped using polluted water taken from the chalk stream at the point where it is affected by sewage discharge. No two rolls are alike, each carries its own colour shifts, marks, and traces of the environment within it. The river doesn’t just appear in the images - it acts on them. What begins as something beautiful - clear water, soft greens, fragile plant life moves into something else. Unstable. Disrupted. The decay is not added later; it happens within the process itself. This is an investigative, unrushed series, built through return, attention, and time. Nothing here is forced. The work is left to sit, to shift, to be marked by the same conditions it comes from.
